This wonderful documentary is the first about Sacred Harp singing, a form of a cappella, shape note hymn singing. It has been sung in country churches in southern U.S. for over 200 years. Original Sacred Harp - Denson Revision 1987 Standard Melodies is a 160 year old shape note hymnal, which preserves some of the oldest songs in America. The filmmakers, Matt and Erica Hinton spent seven years making this film focusing on the “Lost Tonal Tribe”.

For myself, the sounds and the history of this form of music were entrancing. I’ve stolen the title of my Review from Joe Dempsey of the “Washington City Paper”, who caught my reactions exactly: “Spectacular… Get enough people singing weird harmonies at the top of their voices and you start feeling a little sorry for the devil.”

Robert C. Ross 2008

As an avid Shape Note singer I must say that Matt&Erica’s film is

an excellent intro to this wonderful American music.I am glad and proud to

be part of the fold that is doing all it can to keep this music alive.

For those who enjoy Mario Bava’s horror films, this movie will come as a surprise. It shows a side of Bava not normally associated with him. This is a wonderful, thought-provoking film that works as a light hearted comedy and as a character study of human sexuality (which was daring for 1968).

John and Tina meet while Tina is walking her dog. They go out on a date which turns into a disaster when Tina reurns home with a ripped up dress and John with scratched on the forehead. What follows are three different perspectives from John, Tina, and John’s doorman who spied on them, on what actually happened, followed by a fourth perspective by a psychiatrist on what could have happened (it’s up to the viewer to make up their minds).

This subtitled DVD comes with Mario Bava’s biography and filmography, good liner notes from Tim Lucas, and a photo and poster gallery.

Recommended.

Almost invisible for 32 years, italian director Mario Bava’s FOUR TIMES THAT NIGHT is now presented by Image in the DVD standard. Shot in late 1968, at the beginning of the erotic wave that submerged the B cinema of Italia, Germany and France, this movie didn’t make it in front of the italian censorship and was banned from italian and international screens until 1973. It can not be denied that FOUR TIMES THAT NIGHT delivers a certain amount of eroticism due mostly to the sculptural Daniela Giordano, Miss Italy 1966.

Other problematic scenes - for the censors, I mean - include homosexual and lesbian behaviours, mostly verbal and a night in a club for special people. I suppose that the producers of FOUR TIMES THAT NIGHT, if they only had produced it two years later, would have a tremendous success because the cinematography is, as always in Mario Bava’s movies, original and innovative. The first story, partly narrated ” off ” by Daniela Giordano is a little masterpiece that doesn’t leave unharmed womanizers nor innocent sex symbols.

The theme of FOUR TIMES THAT NIGHT is well known, the same story is told not from two three different points of view but rather from three different perspectives. A psychiatrist has the difficult task to propose the fourth version which could be or…not the real one.

The copy presented by Image is deceiving if we have in mind the Mario Bava movies that Anchor Bay or VCI released a few months ago. White spots haven’t been digitally treated and the colours are very sad. As bonus features, biography and filmography of Mario Bava and english subtitles. Less than the minimum.

A DVD zone discovery.

Don’t you just hate it when the description of one of these classic cartoon sets doesn’t include a description of the cartoons? In this case, they are really worth mentioning, as some, such as Disc Two’s “Peace on Earth,” aren’t exactly kiddie fare, and many others are true animation classics (I’ve starred the ones I think best earn that honor). With that in mind, here’s a description of each cartoon, written as I watch them:

DISC ONE

Each of these was honored by the Academy as the Best Cartoon of the Year:

Buy,Download, Or Stream Warner Brothers Home Entertainment Academy Awards Animation Collection - 15 Winners, 26 Nominees! Click Here

1. THE MILKY WAY* (MGM, 1940)

Clear color, great clarity and a nice period song highlight this restored cute classic. When three little kittens lose their mittens, they’re sent straight to bed — where they dream that they sail a hot air balloon up into the Milky Way, a land overflowing with milk geysers and springs. The cartoon was the first Oscar winner that wasn’t produced by Disney.

2. YANKEE DOODLE MOUSE* (MGM, 1943)

Typical Tom and Jerry antics doused in patriotic instrumentals such as “Anchors Aweigh” and “Over There.” Dynamite, egg grenades and champagne-bottle corks are the weapons of choice. I’ll admit I’m not the biggest Tom & Jerry fan, but my 13-year-old daughter loves this one.

3. MOUSE TROUBLE (MGM, 1944)

Tom’s the one in trouble as he attempts to rid the house of Jerry, using the ideas in a book called “How to Catch a Mouse (A Random Mouse Book).”

4. QUIET PLEASE* (MGM, 1945)

Even I like this one. In fact, I LOVE this one! Though it’s directed by Hanna and Barbera, Tex Avery’s jaw-dropping influence is all through it. Funny gags, great character expressions! When a sleepy Spike threatens to kill Tom if the cat doesn’t keep quiet (”If I hear one more sound I’ve gonna skin you alive, get it?”), Jerry tries to make as much noise as he can. Optional audio commentary by animator Mark Kausler highlights the contributions from many former Disney artists.

5. THE CAT CONCERTO* (MGM, 1947)

When Jerry disrupts Tom’s grand piano performance of Liszt’s Second Hungarian Rhapsody, Tom fights back while never missing a note. Optional audio commentary by animator Eric Goldberg. You know, I’m really starting to get into this Tom & Jerry stuff!

6. TWEETIE PIE* (Warner Bros., 1947)

A cat (here named Thomas, later known as Sylvester) uses a variety of screwball techniques as he tries to catch the little yellow bird in a series of short sketches. Vivid color! The first Sylvester and Tweety cartoon, and the first Warner Bros. short to win an Oscar.

7. THE LITTLE ORPHAN (MGM, 1949)

Tiny mouse Nibbles is always hungry, which causes trouble for Jerry.

8. FOR SCENT-IMENTAL REASONS* (Warner Bros., 1949)

The debut of Pepé Le Pew (my favorite Chuck Jones character), an amorous skunk who mistakes a black female cat for a potential mate. Pepé’s influence can be seen in the Disney characters Lumiere from Beauty and the Beast as well as Capt. Jack Sparrow from the Pirates of the Caribbean films. Optional audio commentary by animator Greg Ford.

9. SO MUCH FOR SO LITTLE (Warner Bros., 1949)

This 10-minute animated PSA won the 1949 Oscar for Best Documentary Short. Its point: how federal public-health services can keep babies healthy and free from diseases. Cute, and better than it sounds, though scenes include such things as “untreated sewage running into our pretty creek.” Optional audio commentary by animation historian Jerry Beck.

10. THE TWO MOUSEKETEERS (MGM, 1951)

Musketeers Jerry and Nibbles cause trouble for Royal Guard Tom at a king’s banquet. Routine.

11. JOHANN MOUSE (MGM, 1952)

Tom learns to play the piano in an effort to catch Jerry, who can’t help but dance whenever he hears a Johann Strauss waltz. MGM debuted a new-look Tom with this short, in which he first appears without the grey stripe between his eyes.

12. SPEEDY GONZALES* (Warner Bros., 1955)

They couldn’t make this one today! To help his starving friends, the Mexican Don Juan mouse must sneak past makeshift border guard Sylvester and raid a U.S. cheese factory. When one of the friends proclaims “Speedy Gonzales a friend of my sister!” another replies “Speedy Gonzales friend of everybody’s sister. Optional music-only audio track.

13. BIRDS ANONYMOUS (Warner Bros., 1957)

Sylvester tries to break his addiction to feathered food by joining Birds Anonymous, but the temptation of Tweety is too much. Includes the first appearance of Sylvester’s fellow feline, Sam.

14. KNIGHTY-KNIGHT BUGS (Warner Bros., 1958)

On a quest for a Singing Sword, Bugs Bunny sneaks into the castle of the Black Knight, where he meets a fire-breathing, but sneezing dragon. Song: “Cuddle Up a Little Closer.”

15. THE DOT AND THE LINE* (MGM, 1965)

A line loves a dot, but she’s hot for a squiggle in this charming, colorful and witty 10-minute Chuck Jones gem. Subtitled “A Romance in Lower Mathematics,” it’s based on the 1963 book by architect and children’s author Norton Juster. Optional audio commentary by Eric Goldberg. Optional music-only audio track.

DISC TWO

1. POPEYE THE SAILOR MEETS SINBAD THE SAILOR* (Paramount /Fleischer, 1936)

When Sinbad (i.e., Bluto) challenges Popeye to a series of battles, the big brute nearly wins until Popeye pulls out his can of spinach. Many scenes use modeled sets to create three-dimensional backgrounds. 16 minutes, color. Optional audio commentary by Jerry Beck, illustrator Leslie Cabarga and animators Ray Pointer and Bob Jaques.

2. PEACE ON EARTH* (MGM, 1939)

A chilling classic. During a post-apocalyptic Christmas Eve, two young squirrels ask their grandfather what the word “men” means in the lyric “Peace on earth, good will to men.” As he explains that man was the species that destroyed itself by waging war, the cartoon shows rotoscoped scenes of armed conflict. Optional audio commentary by Greg Ford.

3. A WILD HARE* (Warner Bros., 1940)

The first official Bugs Bunny cartoon looks primitive by later standards, but still has all the ingredients of the rascally rabbit’s recipe. When “wabbit” hunter Elmer Fudd sticks his rifle down a hole, up pops Bugs to ask “What’s up, Doc?” Optional audio commentary by Greg Ford.

4. PUSS GETS THE BOOT* (MGM, 1940)

Tom is called Jaspar in this early version of a Tom and Jerry short. A typical cat-and-mouse chase results in a number of broken household objects. Optional audio commentary by Mark Kausler.

5. SUPERMAN* (Paramount /Fleischer, 1941)

The classic story of The Man Of Steel as told in a 10-minute animated short, including his early life in rural Kansas. Later, he works with Perry White and Lois Lane at The Daily Planet as Clark Kent, but must change into Superman to save Lois, and the world, from a mad scientist. The first Superman cartoon. Optional audio commentary by producer Paul Dini.

6. HIAWATHA’S RABBIT HUNT (Warner Bros., 1941)

When an Elmer Fudd-like Hiawatha (from the classic Henry Wadsworth Longfellow poem The Song of Hiawatha) arrives in the forest hunting rabbits for dinner, Bugs will have none of it.

7. RHAPSODY IN RIVETS* (Warner Bros., 1941)

Ever seen Fantasia 2000’s version of “Rhapsody in Blue”? Here’s an obvious inspiration. A construction site foreman imagines himself as as conductor of Franz Liszt’s “Hungarian Rhapsody,” with his workers as the orchestra.

8. THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS (MGM, 1941)

Tom chases Jerry under and around a Christmas tree until — holy cats! — he is touched by the holiday spirit.

9. THE BLITZ WOLF* (MGM, 1942)

When the evil Adolph Wolf wants to invade the state of Pigmania, Sergeant Pork spoils his plans. A wartime take on “The Three Little Pigs.” Optional audio commentary by Eric Goldberg.

10. PIGS IN A POLKA* (Warner Bros., 1942)

In a parody of Disney’s 1940 film Fantasia, The Big Bad Wolf channels the spirit of Deems Taylor as he introduces a spoof of the Three Little Pigs set to a classical music piece, in this case Brahms’ “Hungarian Dances.”

11. SWOONER CROONER* (Warner Bros., 1944)

Frank Sinatra, Cab Calloway, Jimmy Durante and Al Jolson are among the crooners caricatured as Porky Pig holds a contest to help his hens lay more eggs. Songs include “As Time Goes By,” “Shortenin’ Bread,” “Lullaby of Broadway” and “You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby.”

12. WALKY TALKY HAWKY* (Warner Bros., 1946)

When naive young chicken hawk Henery comes across Foghorn Leghorn, the rooster proclaims “I’m a horse!” and proceeds to convince the little bird that the real chicken is the Barnyard Dog. “Ooh!” says Henery. “That’s the biggest chicken I ever did see!” Optional audio commentary by Jerry Beck.

13. DR. JEKYLL AND MR. MOUSE (MGM, 1947)

Every idea backfires when Tom tries to stop Jerry from drinking from a milk bowl.

14. MOUSE WRECKERS (Warner Bros., 1948)

Claude Cat debuts as he battles with hobo mice Hubie and Bertie over a new home.

DISC 3

1. HATCH UP YOUR TROUBLES (MGM, 1949)

Jerry plays mom to a baby woodpecker that hatches in his bed.

2. JERRY’S COUSIN (MGM, 1950)

Legendary voice talent Paul Frees portrays Jerry’s cousin Muscles, a mouse who is so strong Tom ends up groveling at his feet. Background music includes “Lydia, the Tattooed Lady,” best known as a gem from Groucho Marx.

3. LITTLE JOHNNY JET* (MGM, 1952)

A baby jet helps his father, an old B-29, find work after the war. A old fighter pilot resembles Gen. Douglas MacArthur. Optional music-only audio track.

4. TOUCHÉ, PUSSY CAT! (MGM, 1954)

Tuffy (formerly known as Nibbles) is desperate to join Captain Jerry’s Mouseketeers. Songs: “Frere Jacques,” “We’re on Our Way.” Cinemascope. Optional music-only audio track.

5. FROM A TO Z-Z-Z-Z* (Warner Bros., 1953)

The daydreams of schoolboy Ralph Phillips include flying like a bird, punching out an opponent in the boxing ring and becoming Douglas MacArthur. Optional audio commentary by animation author Amid Amidi (Cartoon Modern: Style and Design in 1950s Animation, The Art of Robots).

6. SANDY CLAWS* (MGM, 1954)

When Granny takes Tweety to the beach, Sylvester tries to steal him from his cage, then “rescue” the bird from some huge waves.

7. GOOD WILL TO MEN (MGM, 1955)

An atomic-era version of Disc 2’s “Peace on Earth,” this time with mice in the ruins of a church. Optional music-only audio track.

8. TABASCO ROAD* (Warner Bros., 1957)

After a festive night in a cantina, Speedy Gonzales has to rescue tequila-tinged buddies Fernando and Pablo from a huge cat. Optional music-only audio track.

9. ONE DROOPY KNIGHT (MGM, 1957)

Sirs Butchalot and Droopalot vie to kill a dragon to win a princess. One of the worst Droopy cartoons, it was nevertheless nominated for 1957’s Best Short Subject Academy Award. Cinemascope. Optional music-only audio track.

10. HIGH NOTE* (Warner Bros., 1960)

When a set of musical notes attempts to arrange themselves to perform the Johann Strauss classic “The Blue Danube,” a rogue note ruins their plans after visiting the “Little Brown Jug.”

11. NELLY’S FOLLY* (Warner Bros., 1961)

Homewrecker! That’s the reputation a singing giraffe from Africa gets after she arrives at a zoo and develops a relationship with a married male.

12. NOW HEAR THIS* (Warner Bros., 1962)

This spare, surreal, almost psychedelic Chuck Jones masterpiece concerns an old British gent who thinks he finds a magical hearing aid, though it’s actually a horn from Satan’s forehead. There’s no dialogue, but many, many sound effects. The first Warner Bros. short to feature the company’s revised graphic titles, it also includes a rarely heard rendition of “The Merry Go-Round Broke Down.” Optional audio commentary by Amid Amidi.

There are two nice bonus features. “Drawn for Glory: Animation’s Triumph at the Oscars” is a new 60-minute, clip-heavy documentary that covers all the major studios. “What’s Cookin’ Doc?” is a 1944 Bugs Bunny short that shows the rabbit at an Academy Awards ceremony fighting to win the Oscar for “Hiawatha’s Rabbit Hunt.” He ends up with a booby prize, a rabbit statue that comes to life with the voice of famed radio star Bert “The Mad Russian” Gordon.

This set will include the separately released Winners disc Warner Brothers Home Entertainment Academy Awards Animation Collection - The 15 Winners, pluse two discs of nominees. C. S. Forester certainly began the saga of his Napoleonic-Era naval hero Horatio Hornblower “in media res.” Here is Hornblower as a dashing captain, with the stories of his younger days and later glories both yet to be penned. “Captain Horatio Hornblower” actually covers the key events in Forester’s first trio of Hornblower adventures, “Beat to Quarters,” “Ship of the Line” and Flying Colours.” Hornblower (American Gregory Peck playing the quintessential English hero) is sent on a secret mission to the far side of South America where he has to capture a Spanish frigate not once but twice, all because of the problematic delay in having new orders catch up with him in the time of wooden sailing ships. Chance throws Hornblower together with Lady Barbara Wellesley (Virginia Mayo), the sister of the Duke of Wellington. She is engaged to some admiral and he is already married, but there is no doubt that they are meant for each other. Besides, even Fate has to take a backseat to Hornblower’s sense of duty. Even when he is captured by the French it is but another opportunity for grand adventure. Like many fans I came to the Hornblower novels and this rousing 1951 film directed by Raoul Walsh. The happy ending falls into place a bit too neatly, but that is what happened in the original novels and not simply a Hollywood decision. The sea battles with the fully rigged ships are as fine as you can find from the good old days of movie-making, but my favorite scene is the touching one when the Captain and Lady Barbara deal with the final moment’s of the youngest member of the ship’s company. “Captain Horatio Hornblower,” like the novels, achieves that feeling that we are truly in the middle of an epic tale, with well-established characters who we readily believe have already had long and glorious histories. I think Lt. Bush (Robert Beatty) gets a lot of the credit for that as the unofficial “narrator” of the tale. So, if you have loved the imported A&E adventures of the young Horatio Hornblower, you certainly need to get around to watching the original film version and reading Forester’s novels. If not, you will just be a scurvy dog, matie.

After starting on Patrick O’Brian, I have also discovered Horatio Hornblower first with the first A&E episode “The Duel” (Ion Gruffyd, Robert Lindsay), and now with the 1951 movie “Captain Hornblower” starring Gregory Peck. I have *not* read the Hornblower books yet, so my review is from the perspective of someone new to naval fiction and naval movies.

Gregory Peck is one of my favorite actors, which makes this film an easy choice to watch (for me, at least). However, the character of Hornblower (with his trademark Hmm..mmm) and the events covered by the movie are probably closer to the original series than the recent A&E series. [At least, judging from Parkinson's biography covering the same ground as the novels, this would appear to be the case]. If you are a Hornblower purist, you will probably prefer the Gregory Peck movie version for this reason, even though the battle scenes are more sustained and far more exciting in the A&E versions (judging from The Duel).

Captain Hornblower condenses two (or is it three?) books into one - the book in which he is posted on direct orders from the Admiralty, and must round Cape Horn to reach a Spanish rebel, Don Julian Alvorado on the other side of Nicaragua. This feat of seamanship is well-portrayed, with the movie starting at the point where the ship has been at sea for months and has been becalmed. Hornblower takes a wild gamble in assuring the crew and his officers that the wind will pick up that night and that they will sight land within the next day. Amazingly, he pulls this off. In private, his journals reflect his fears and uncertainty, thus allowing us a glimpse at the private Hornblower.

The first part of the movie focuses on Hornblower’s difficult decisions during this secret mission (when he cannot confide in any of his officers, including his second-in-command Lt Bush). He must decide whether to trust Don Julian Alvorado (who is clearly a madman), whether to attack a much larger Spanish frigate with twice the gunpower, and what to do when political events overtake this little expedition.

What is not made clear (at least when I watched the film for the first time) is that Hornblower had really no choice but to go along with Alvorado (or El Supremo) as he likes to call himself. Spain is allied with Napoleonic France, and Hornblower must re-provision his ship. The nearest British port of call is St Helena - on the other side of South America. Hornblower was not simply following Admiralty orders, he was also taking a risk to keep his crew alive.

There are several battles, including one major battle when Hornblower’s ship loses one of its mast and is nearly wrecked. Fortunately, brilliant seamanship on his part allows him the upper hand.

During this first part, Hornblower also develops a love interest in Lady Barbara Wellesley (a fictional character, although she is supposedly the sister of the future Duke of Wellington). She is engaged to an admiral Sir Rodney Leighton, but she prefers Hornblower. He was reluctant to have her aboard at first, but had no choice (she was fleeing yellow fever, it would have been professional suicide to leave her behind, with her connections). Unfortunately for Hornblower, he must reveal the truth after Lady Barbara declares her love for him. He is married. The rest of the voyage is strained, with both anxious to return to Britain as soon as possible.

The second part of the movie begins with Hornblower’s return to the British Isles, only to learn that he is a widower and has an infant son. From there, he is placed under the command of Leighton (now Lady Barbara’s husband). Admiral Leighton disapproves of Hornblower’s independence, but our hero’s quick thinking and independent ways pay off in a crucial action against some French ships that have escaped the blockade.

In the third part of the movie, Hornblower is taken prisoner along with his lieutenant, and is to be sent to Paris to be tried and executed for piracy (sailing under French colors). Of course, he escapes eventually and returns home to discover that Lady Barbara has been widowed.

This is a quick summary of the movie, which hardly does justice to many of its finer points. There are some deviations from the book (the story was adapted, by the way, by Forester himself). For example, Sir Percy Leighton becomes Sir Rodney Leighton. [He is of a different social background in the books than in the movie]. Lady Barbara is not engaged to be married at the beginning of the voyage, and she appears proud and haughty to Hornblower. And of course, the collapsing of the three books into one movie means that certain details must be omitted (thus Lt Bush recovers remarkably quickly, or so it would seem). The pace of the adaptation is however just right - the story continues to sustain the viewer’s interest.

The sea battles are well-depicted, and the story was filmed in real ships (of the period, I think) and mostly at sea. However, the battles are less bloody than in the A&E version (perhaps a nod to 1950s sensibilities), and the ships are certainly cleaner than expected. I thought that the ships would be closer together when they engaged in battle.

Despite these minor caveats, this film was delightful to watch. I would recommend this movie strongly to anyone interested in this period (the Napoleonic wars), or anyone interested in nautical fiction. The A&E series covers the very early career of the very young Hornblower, when he is still a midshipman and then makes lieutenant. (At the rate the producers are going, it will take a while before they reach the same events covered by this movie). Even if they do cover this period, watch this movie, if only for Gregory Peck’s portrayal of Hornblower as as as Forester’s own adaptation of his novels for the screen.

This version is true to the book and the acting is superb. The novel’s complexities are brought out by the actors in subtle ways. Kate Beckinsale was the perfect choice for Emma because she played her duel layers so wonderfully. Beckinsale played Emma’s intelligence against her lack of knowledge of the world, without being dumb. She showed that Emma thought she was superior and had to learn that someone’s rank in society does not make them a better person. Mark Strong is great as Mr. Knightley. He plays it serious and heartfelt. Strong brought out Knightley’s strong beliefs and feelings with grace. Everyone else was also cast perfectly. The story was very loyal to the novel. Emma is funny, but really a serious novel about women’s place in society. This version showed all these conplexities with ease and grace. It was beautifully shot and directed. This is truly an adaptation to be proud of and lots of fun to watch over and over. Emma is my second favorite Austen novel on behind Persuasion. I am glad Austen’s less popular works had such great adaptations. Emma got the right treatment here concidering it was Austen’s longest novel… I am happy to say that enough people liked it to make this great adaptation of her work.

This is a production which is enjoyable to watch if not entirely memorable after the fact. I personally think Kate Beckinsale makes the perfect Emma. (I find it hard to imagine Gwyneth Paltrow in the same role, but I’m curious to see that production as well.) Raymond Coulthard is also perfectly cast as Frank Churchill, the quintessential Jane Austen deceptive young cad (and I mean that as a compliment!). Mr Knightley, the eventual romantic interest for Emma, is played by Mark Strong, who does a very good job in the role although I must admit I had trouble seeing him as a romantic lead. Samantha Morton is very appealing as Emma’s shy friend, Harriet.

All in all, I give this production four stars. Although it is nowhere near as compelling as the Pride and Prejudice with Colin Firth, or the Sense and Sensibility with Emma Thompson, it’s still a well done film adaptation of a Jane Austen book - and that’s not easy. :)

This set represents the first of an expected 12 (more?) seasons of the Simpsons to be released on DVD. The current plan is to release 2-3 seasons a year. The second season will be released in time for Christmas.

Since the first season was shorter, this first disc has many extras. First, all of the shorts from the Tracy Ullman show will be there. Also, there will be a “lost” episode included.

Fox must be commended in releasing these discs. When they were preparing to release the discs, they went to the fans, and asked how we would like them released. As season packs? How many extras? How often? Rarely does a publisher care that much.

Specific Contents:

There are 48 shorts from 3 seasons (1987-1989) of the Tracy Ullman Show.

The first season (1989-1990) includes:
7G08 Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire
7G02 Bart the Genius
7G03 Homer’s Odyssey
7G04 There’s No Disgrace Like Home
7G05 Bart the General
7G06 Moaning Lisa

7G09 Call of the Simpsons
7G07 The Tell-Tale Head
7G11 Jacques To Be Wild (aka Life on the Fast Lane)
7G10 Homer’s Night Out
7G13 The Crepes of Wrath
7G12 Krusty Gets Busted
7G01 Some Enchanted Evening

The Simpsons is the longest running comedy, longest running prime time animated series, and is definately some of the wisest, best written comedy and satire ever put on TV. God Bless Fox for giving them all to us.

Oh my God. When I found out about the Simpsons Season 1 Dvd’s I fell of my bed. I’m so happy, because the Simpsons is the best show in the world, anyway I think the 1st season is the 3rd best. The first two being 3 and 11. Okay, so the episodes are… 1. SIMPSONS ROASTING ON AN OPEN FIRE - When bart get’s a tatto, marge has to use the family’s christmas money on a removal, and Homer doesn’t get a bonus, Homer gets a job as a Mall Santa. 2. BART THE GENIUS-Bart cheats on a IQ test and goes a new school. 3. HOMER’S ODYSSEY - Homer get’s fired and goes on a safty kick. 4. THERE’S NO DISGRACE LIKE HOMER - After a picnic homer thinks the family needs theorapy. 5. BART THE GENERAL - Bart leads a battle against Nelson. 6. MOANING LISA - Lisa is sad, but cheered up by Bleeding Gums. 7. THE CALL OF THE SIMPSONS - the Simpsons get lost on a camping trip. 8. THE TELLTALE HEAD - Bart steals a statues Head 9. LIFE ON THE FAST LANE - Marge considers having an affair. 10. HOMER’S NIGHT OUT - Homer get’s caught dancing with a stripper. 11. CREEPS OF WRATH - Bart goes to Paris. 12. KRUSTY GET’S BUSTED - This is the episodes were Sideshow Bob frames Krusty. 13. SOME ENCHANTED EVENING - Homer hires a burglar to babysit the kids. People think Major League, and they think Rick “The Wild Thing” Vaughn, Willie “Mays” Hayes and Pedro Cerrano. This film has nothing to do with those Indians teams from 1 & 2, but that doesn’t mean it’s bad.

I think they should have just simply renamed the film. There’s nothing wrong with having a different name for a film with a few of the same characters such as Roger Dorn, Pedro Cerrano and Taka Tanaka.

This movie comes out with some good baseball knowledge for both on the field and off the field stuff. Pops McGee and Doc who’s fastballs couldn’t kill a fly if it hit is straight on are great examples of what you see in the minors. Guys with heart who just aren’t good enough to make it to the Bigs. Then there’s the prima donna top prospect “Downtown” Anderson who thinks he’s the next Ken Griffey Jr.

This film is meant to be fun, it’s not supposed to be Bull Durham. It delivers what it wanted to deliver…entertainment. Especially for the baseball fan who doesn’t want to see a monkey or a 10 year become a major leaguer. Although Little Big League is underrated as well, but that’s a different story.

I would give this movie 3.5 out of 5 stars if it were possible, but we can’t vote like that here, so I rounded it up.

I’ll admit that the only reason I even considered watching this film is the fact that Kenny Johnson and Walton Goggins are in it. I’m a huge fan of The Shield and wanted to see the actors in more films. Was I very critical before I saw it? Yeah I was, how could you not be.

Like I said before, the movie is what it is. A goofy, often funny, movie that’s almost entertaining the entire way through. Yes it’s bad, but it’s also enjoyable in that way. It’s not trying to be a classic, it’s trying to be a fun movie. And in that way I think it’s very enjoyable.

Most fans of the other two major league films are very critical of this one. In my opinion, I really don’t consider this a film in that trilogy. Yeah I know it shares the name of the other two, but it’s just different. It’s really just a film on it’s own, and that’s the way I think it should be seen as.

The Secret is available for streaming or downloading.

The Secret is one of the best produced and edited DVDs of its kind that I have ever seen. And the line-up of teachers and presenters is top-notch. There is only one reason I give this DVD four stars instead of five. The Secret is about the Law of Attraction, and how we can use that Law to “attract” into our lives anything we want. But it spends 95% of the time talking only about being focused on what you want (rather than what you don’t want), and generating positive feelings about that. It only spends 5% of the time making it clear that what we really attract into our lives is the people, circumstances, and opportunities that lead us to what we want. In other words, when we utilize the principles mentioned in The Secret, doors open. But we have to recognize those doors for what they are and go through them. And that involves action. Many people who watch The Secret walk away with the impression that visualization and positive feelings is all it takes. It isn’t. You still have to do something. As long as you keep that in mind, The Secret contains information that can be life altering. Enjoy!

Steven Lane Taylor, Author of Row, Row, Row Your Boat: A Guide For Living Life In The Divine Flow

With all the hype about The Secret, I was eager to find out what everyone was talking about. I bought both the DVD and the CD set and watched with great anticipation.

Perhaps because I have studied and utilized for over 2 decades some of the most powerful mindset tools, processes and technologies for creating what you want, my expectations may have been skewed compared to those who have never heard of or applied such concepts as the law of attraction.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Secret! Click Here

That is not to say the DVD/CD does not have value. I am sure there are people whose lives have been changed by it. I think they did an outstanding marketing job. An outstanding “packaging” job in creating The Secret. The attraction principles do work, and they provided a great introduction to those who have not been exposed to them before.

For me personally, my first disappointment was the fact that what was dramatically (and cleverly) built up as “a secret” - which to me something you know that I don’t - was hardly a secret. These principles have been around for centuries, have been mainstream for decades, with thousands of books, seminars, etc. covering the same principles. I don’t appreciate books, tapes, etc. that overpromise and under deliver. So, to me, hardly a secret.

My second disappointment was the lack of depth around the subject matter. If you want more in-dpeth and leading edge info about how our thoughts create our reality, invest in the DVD “What the Bleep?” It offers fascinating leading edge quantum physics principles, along with great animation explaining in simple layman terms, why and how we create our realities. In fact, some of the scientists on The Secret *first* appeared in “What the Bleep?” I almost felt when I was watching The Secret, that they copied “What the Bleep?” in many respects, although at a more superficial level.

My third disappointment/concern is how some Secret followers will interpret the messagge in the movie. Again my perspective may be slightly skewed because I trained in and work with NLP (Neurolinguistic Programmming) which works drectly with the subconscious mind for helping people create accelerated breakthroughs in their lives. The suggestions, recommmended processes, etc. in The Secret work primarily with the conscious mind. Yet it is our subconscious mind that drives 80% of our behaviors and outcomes in life.

Yes, if you practice their recommendations for months and months, the suggestions may eventually sink into our subconscious. However there are simpler, quicker ways to create what you want. The other piece of that, because the subconscious mind does drive our results, there are many blocks — such as “secondary gains” for staying stuck, values conflicts, limited beliefs, etc. - below our conscious awareness that stops us from having what we want. Because the movie does not address the difference between the conscious mind and the subconscious mind, and treats the whole topic superficially as why some people manifest and some don’t, it creates the illusion that as long as you practice their suggestions, you will change your life. There is so much more than what is presented as to what are the differences that make the difference to creating what you want.

While I am glad that so many people are becoming more aware of these principles, I am concerned about the fallout as well. I am hearing people do potentially harmful things like go into deeper debt, making dramatic life changes with blind faith, because the DVD tells them they can have what they want if they just believe, etc.

I would suggest if you buy the DVD to take a few things that most resonated with you, and apply them to your life, as long as you don’t sacrifice or overhaul other areas of your life without looking at the big picture. Sort out the glitz from the message. Also check what is not true for you and let go of it.

I would recommend the movie “what the bleep?” It goes hand in hand with The Secret, although more in depth and was the original movie that brought these concepts mainstream.

Third, I recommend that you check out book on NLP (as well as hypnosis which is a sister discipline). Out of all the mindset tools and technologies I have used in over 20 years, I have found they are by far the most powerful. One of the best “beginner” books is: “NLP: The New Technology of Achievement”.

Good luck and may your journey be an abundant one!

One of the best recent anime series allowed in prime time. Continues the Chunin exams story arc. Only down side is that these sets are only 3 disc half-seasons rather than full seasons, especially considering the price. That’s the only reason I rated it 4 instead of 5.
